YOUNG-JAE LEE: CERAMICS | JAMES BISHOP: OIL ON PAPER

This exhibition will feature works by two exceptional modern masters.

Young-Jae Lee is represented by hand-thrown shallow bowls and tall pots, fashioned in the tradition of ancient Korean ceramics. Surface, glaze, and shape differ subtly, radiating the grace, proficiency and delicacy characteristic of this artist.

Born in Korea, Ms. Lee moved to Germany in the 1970's, when she took charge of the one of the last vestiges of Walter Gropius' Bauhaus movement. In 1989, she was awarded with the Bavarian State Prize, and during the 1990's her ceramics were seen in Germany, Austria, Japan, Korea and California. In September 2005, a one-person show will be mounted at the Hamburger Bahnhof in Berlin.

The appropriate complement to this elegance: a few exquisite oil on paper works by James Bishop (b. 1927), which will be displayed in the gallery's second room. Nuances of color and form have preoccupied this artist since the early sixties. Bishop, long based in France, is distinguished by a sensitive and minimalist approach. He is somewhat reclusive, and his works are too rarely seen, especially in America. This painter has inhabited the cutting edge of abstraction throughout his long career.

The exhibition will be an exciting juxtaposition. This is the first show of James Bishop at Nolan/Eckman; it is Young-Jae Lee's third appearance.
