David Nolan Gallery is pleased to announce an exhibition of recent works by Victoria Gitman.

The exhibition features drawings and paintings of antique beaded purses acquired by Gitman at swap shows and flea markets. Each object was carefully chosen because of its minimal qualities and its patterning, bringing to mind the works of Sol Lewitt and Agnes Martin. Gitman reproduces each purse to scale and no expressive brushstrokes or pencil marks can be discerned, even upon very close examination. The realism of Gitman's drawings and paintings harkens back to the illusionism of Old Master paintings. In addition to bringing to the fore what might be perceived as an old fashioned technique of making art, her work also opens up questions about contemporary society, the display of objects and notions of femininity, desire, and consumption.

Victoria Gitman was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina in 1972. She graduated summa cum laude with a BFA in Painting and a BA in Humanities from Florida International University in 1996. Her work is in the collections of The Museum of Modern Art, New York, the Museum of Contemporary Art, San Diego, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, The Detroit Institute of Arts, the Whitney Museum of American Art, and numerous private collections.

This exhibition will also be on view at Daniel Weinberg Gallery, Los Angeles, from October 21, 2006 through November 25, 2006.
